My Job!

My choice to become a stay at home mum was super easy!  In fact there was never a question over whether I would stay home or go back to work.  It just happened naturally when Ollie was born, I had to leave my job anyway because we were due to move back to Belfast!

I can’t believe how quickly time as a stay at home mum has flown by.  Here we are 9 years since I left work and I can’t imagine what returning to employment will be like! It’s necessary now rather than optional because I need to be financially independent!  I feel very fortunate that I’ve had the opportunity to stay at home with my boys for so long!  It’s always made sense financially but now with them both in school…

I know we aren’t meant to call staying at home a job… but this is by far the best job I’ve ever had and I’ve learnt lots about responsibility, patience, using my imagination and a ton of other skills that might benefit me when I re-enter the workplace.  I’ve loved seeing the boys as much as I have and filling our days with playing, crafts and adventures.

Now with my kids in school, it’s time for me to get my butt into gear regarding my career path.  It’s time.  What will I do??  Who knows!

I’ve Been Smiling Recently Because…

♥  I discovered that the movie adaptation of The Girl On The Train, is going to be out towards the end of the year… and not only that but it has Emily Blunt playing the lead! Excited plus plus!!

♥  I became owner of a brand new electric blanket.  It seems I missed the boat on them a lot of years back but this week I took the plunge.  I’m glad I did too… aside from it being the best thing ever, I have a rotten bad cold at the moment and the blanket is helping immeasurably.  Also, getting to snug my boys in a toastie bed… doesn’t get much better than that.

♥  I have a rediscovered obsession with Cadbury’s Picnic bars.  SO much happiness in one little bar.

♥  I’m almost finished watching season 3 of Wentworth!  What an awesome show, I can’t wait until the new season comes out!

♥  I got to dress my two little men up for World Book Day this morning.  Ollie wanted to go as Greg from Diary Of A Wimpy Kid and Nate wanted to go as Spiderman.  They looked fab!

♥  It’s Friday tomorrow and I have a lovely couple of days planned including cooking a Mother’s Day dinner for my Mum on Saturday night.  This is our tradition every single year and we have dinner and watch a movie together.

♥  I have a stack of new magazines just waiting to be read.  My favourites are Flow, Oh Comely, Frankie and The Simple Things.

♥  I’ve got my salad cravings back, I suppose because we are heading into spring soon.  Nobody craves a salad so much when it’s freezing outside.  Goats cheese is my absolute favourite.

♥  Being unwell and in bed meant I had time to spend filling out my planner and making it look pretty.

♥  I recently invested in a bath tray.  Best purchase of 2016 so far (except for the electric blanket).  How decadent it is to lie in the bath with somewhere to set your wine glass full of Coke, your chocolate and your book.

  1. This book!  It’s hilarious and so honest!  I’ve been trying so hard to read more and I’m really enjoying myself.  I finished a book in January called ‘The Girl On The Train‘ by Paula Hawkins and it was so hard to put down.  This book is very very different but I’ve enjoyed it.  I have my next few books lined up already.

2.  BLTs!  I can’t remember when I last had a BLT but I had one with a friend recently and now I can’t get enough of them.  I like to put red onion and avocado in mine too though… and the bread definitely needs to be toasted first!

3.  Decorating!  Finally got all the bedrooms decorated.  They are all painted shades of grey or white and I’m loving how bright and airy our upstairs now feels.  Both the boys chose elements for their own room and while Nate’s is finished with a superhero theme… we are still figuring out what sort of spin to put on Ollie’s.  We need to by a few bits to adorn his walls but he loves it so far.  I’m so glad my room is no longer the baby blue that used to make it the boys bedroom!

4.  Gigs!!  February is/ has been so gig/ show heavy!  I saw The Bodyguard the first week of the month, Frank Turner the second week, this week I am seeing Gabrielle Aplin and next week we see Foxes!  Gigs are my happy place and I’ve been lucky enough to see Frank Turner twice this month.  He hasn’t played in Ireland for a good 3 years so I took the opportunity to see him the two dates he was playing and I’m so so glad that I did.  He blew me away.  Two solid hours of amazing music and performance.  My dad came with me the second night in Dublin.

5.  Pretty night skies.

So…. Roller Derby!

Roller derby came into my life in April of last year and since then a day hasn’t passed where I haven’t thought about my roller derby dreams!  I’ve never been into a sport (EVER) and to be honest, I find exercise boring… so I’ve surprised myself with just how hooked I’ve become on this.

Since April, once a weekend for an hour and a half, we’ve been training really hard.  The first few weekends were spent getting to grips with having wheels on our feet but after week 4 it ramped up and got hard and amazing.  Mondays brought derby legs… a pain I hadn’t felt before but I knew it was good because it meant I’d really tried hard!  I learnt so many skills… crossovers, skating backwards, transitions, jumps and then when summer came we got into full contact and how to give/ take hits etc.

In order to go into the next level of training, everyone needs to pass what is known as a minimum skills assessment.  Minimum skills assessment was in the 3rd week of September and I couldn’t believe it when I found out I had passed (albeit by the skin of my teeth)!!  Pleased doesn’t even come close.  I even got to choose my derby name, Emmageddon with my birthday as my derby number.

Then level 2 started and I learned SO much, SO fast… so fast that some of it escaped me and I’ve found myself in level 2 for a second time.  This is no bad thing, I’m not mentally ready for the intensity that comes with being in advanced, which is what comes next…

It’s intense but I love it and I’ve made AMAZING friends.  There have been ups and downs and two of my closest friends got broken bones in the summer just weeks apart.  One of those friends has launched herself into the league off skates doing Line up (Meryl Screech)… and the other, my derby wife, has been back on skates for a few weeks now (Slammity Jane).  My other friend just made advanced and she is doing AMAZING (Tinkerblaze).

I want to play on a team someday… but I’m taking babysteps right now.  I’m not good under pressure so I’m telling myself that I go each week because I love to skate and someday I’ll hopefully be good enough to make a team and play roller derby like a badass!  I need to grow my confidence first.  I can’t imagine life without roller derby now and I’d encourage everyone to give it a try!

Hello 2016!

I LOVE having a brand new year with no mistakes in it yet… a big fat new chance to try and be better and chase your dreams.  I’m enthusiastic to move forward on 2016’s plans and adventures.  Every day I feel like I could do better and be better and so I thought up some things that I’d particularly like to work on this year.

Because I don’t like calling them resolutions.  Resolutions carry with them a lot of pressure to be perfect and a self imposed feeling of failure when/ if we slip up.  A goal is something that is aimed for… so long as I’m trying my best there is nothing to fail at.  Right?

This year I want to work on my photography business.  I want to be a photographer and I want to capture lovely moments.  I have all the gear I need to get started, now I just need the guts and with Nate in nursery school every day, I have no excuse but to get to grips with my gear and get my portfolio in order.  Plus, one of my amazing best friends double dared me to work towards this dream this year.  I don’t bail on a double dare.

I want to say yes more often!  This goal features in my list every single year because it’s important!!  Too often I find myself telling the boys that I’ll be there “in a minute” or that “I’m busy” and “we will do it later” when really, the matter at hand is rarely urgent.  Who knows what opportunities to connect with my amazing boys I am missing by being ‘busy’!  So I’m consciously going to say yes.

I want to spend more time nurturing my best friendships and spend less time worrying about friendships that are broken (that I’ve tried to mend) and friendships that are one-sided.  This year, one-sided friendships have hurt my heart… I’ve spent too much time worrying about things that aren’t my fault.  Time that could have been spent appreciating those that I’m lucky enough to love on and call my besties.

Roller derby, I hope, will feature big this year.  I wanna rock roller derby and I’m going to give it my all, because I’ve already learned so much!  Never before have I loved a sport and here I find myself doing something that, one day, I might actually be really good at!  Roller derby in 2015 brought me amazing new friends and so so much fun and I hope 2016 will be as awesome.

Other goals that need no explanation are to save money, blog consistently (because I sucked at blogging in 2015), become a morning person, drink water, cook more, be more patient and take positive steps in becoming the person I want to be.

2016, I’m ready!

Goodbye 2015!

I love the feeling of saying goodbye to a year… New Year is a chance to set your life on a path of your choosing and to set new goals!  2015 for me has been relatively quiet… ups and few downs, some travels, new adventures, amazing new friends and I’ve learned more about myself this year than any other.

I love that I got to experience so much this year, thankful to be loved and to have so many to love back too and thankful that we’ve been happy and healthy!

Excited to see where 2016 takes us!
